¡¡HE following pages came into existence by request of the relatives of the Belfry Family, convened at a social gathering. It chiefly arose through the grand-children of Mr. Belfry being desirous of obtaining information concerning their ancestors. Previous to the request having been put into business form, the writer had no intention of entering into the necessarily protracted effort of preparing a record of facts, several of which were reminiscences of this remarkable family, that would form anything like a history. Hence there had been no previous preparation for this undertaking. Mr. and Mrs. Belfry had Ibeen many years deceased, and items of interest that ought to have been recorded, which they in their lifetime were known to relate, had nearly faded from memory, and other items of now seeming importance for a work of this kind were forgotten, or may have been omitted in their rehearsal of occurrences. Their oldest son, Oran, who was acquainted with many relatives, and had an excellent memory concerning ancestors and their connections, had been deceased also some ten or twelve years; iv PREFACE.
