About US National Archives, New York, Port Passenger List during the Irish Famine 1846–1851
This database is from The National Archives, and originally entitled Famine Irish Passenger Record Data File (FIPAS), 1/12/1846 - 12/31/1851. The descriptive information here is adapted from the United States of America National Archives website. More information about the database may be available there.
These records contain an index of passengers arriving in the United States at New York. Each entry includes the following, when available: name, age, town of last residence, destination, passenger arrival date, along with codes for passenger’s sex, occupation, literacy native county, transit status, travel compartment, passenger port of embarkation, and the identification number for the ship manifest. This data is unrestricted.
Passenger lists can help you trace the movement of your ancestors across the sea into the United States. Because standardized spelling of names and other words is something that didn’t happen until the twentieth century, you may have challenges finding your ancestors. Once you locate them, however, you can find helpful information, such as their occupation, reason for travel, companions, and age at the time that they sailed on the ship. At the moment, passenger indexes are not as common as many of the more popular records, but they are quickly growing in usage. If you would like to locate one of your ancestors on a passenger list, try to prepare with the following information: the port of entry, the name of the ship, and the approximate date of arrival. This information will increase the likelihood of success in your search.
