Your local organization to prevent and extenguish brush and woods fires is glad to rep o rt a good y ear of fo rest protection in 1948. In spite of danger conditions nearly equalling a t times those of 1947 when g re at losses were suffered in New H am pshire and New England, fire dam age and loss this y ear have been gratifyingly low. W ith the continuing cooperation of all the people, we can hope to have another successful y ear in 1949. Let us rem em ber th a t in any year over 90 per cent of all fires are caused by carelessness, and th a t all of these man-caused fires are preventable. Today, we have more slash and uncut grassland than fo r m any years in the past. .Smokers, cam pers and to urists who use our outdoors are also more num erous than ever before. We m ust therefore be ready fo r fires which m ight occur but, above all, pre vention by everyone is the g re a te st need.
