The past year has been one of accomplishments, transition and problems that certainly transcend the boundaries of our little town.

The major snowstorms of February and March of last year taxed the resources of governmental bodies, businesses and families. A number of counties received FEMA funds to help with the excessive cost of dealing with the storms. Sullivan County did not qualify for these funds as we did not have official Snow Depth Counters. That problem has now been resolved for Lempster with Guydine DeAnne, Judith Patterson, Mary Grenier and James Grenier having been appointed as our depth counters.

One of the results of the storms was the collapse of a Jolly Farmer garage building in which the Lempster Fire Department ladder truck was stored, resulting in a constructive total loss to the truck. Because our insurance coverage provided for a replacement cost option we were able to obtain a new truck valued at approximately $396,000. Our insurance carrier had offered a cash settlement of $250,000 in lieu of the new truck. Following a public hearing on the matter it was voted to opt for the truck.
