These records contain an index of passengers arriving in the United States almost exclusively from Italy. Each entry includes the following, when available: age, country, destination, first name, ID, last name, last residence, literacy, manifest, occupation, passage, and gender. These records are unrestricted.
Passenger lists can help you trace the movement of your ancestors across the sea from Italy into the United States. Because standardized spelling of names and other words is something that didn’t happen until the twentieth century, you may have challenges finding your ancestors. Once you locate them, however, you can find helpful information, such as their occupation, reason for travel, companions, and age at the time that they sailed on the ship. At the moment, passenger indexes are not as common as many of the more popular records, but they are quickly growing in usage. If you would like to locate one of your ancestors on a passenger list, try to prepare with the following information: the port of entry, the name of the ship, and the approximate date of arrival. This information will increase the likelihood of success in your search.
