This database is from the Virginia Center for Digital History - University of Virginia, and originally entitled U.S. Slaveowners Census for 1860. The descriptive information here is adapted from their website. More information about the database may be available there.
These records contain an index to slaveowners from Virginia. Each entry includes the following, when available: last name, first name, location, employer name, employer location, total slaves, male slaves, female slaves, black slaves, mulatto slaves, and link.
Census records are one of the basic building blocks of genealogy in Virginia. A census can offer you a vast amount of information including, but not limited to: the head of the family, composition of the household, occupation, pensioners, handicapped people, gender, age, place of birth, property value, etc. Unfortunately, there are times when it can be difficult to locate your ancestor in a particular census.
Indexes, whether manuscript, printer, or digital, are nowhere near perfect. Names are easily misread by people unfamiliar with the localities, thus, the indexes are filled with incorrect names, making it difficult to find your people. This situation is only exacerbated in cases where the residents do not necessarily speak the same primary language as the census taker. One way to find your missing ancestors is to look for families that lived next to them in previous or succeeding Virginia censuses. Search for those families and scan the pages around them. Also try to use a city or telephone directory to help you determine the correct address for people, and then cross check that information with what you find in the census. Your ancestors may pop right out at you.
