THE purpose of this publication is to direct all persons interested to an orderly and permanent compilation of names and records of those from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, who, during the War for the Suppression of the Rebellion, so heroically tendered their services that the Union of the States might be perpetuated.

The compilation contains, in alphabetical order, the name and official record of every man (so far as we have been able to ascertain), who served in the United States Army or Navy from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, during the time of the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865, giving the rank and organization in which the service was rendered, naming the company, regiment, battalion, battery or war vessel. The number of the tablet on which his name appears in Memorial Hall is also noted. Thus is placed in easy access information which is so often desired by persons having the name of the soldier only.

In addition are listed the names of the United States Colored Troops, also the Emergency Men who volunteered during that period, from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in defense of the State.
